The Würth Annual Report is the winner of the private publ!c Awards 2009

ergo Kommunikation and PKF offer the first comprehensive analysis of annual reports of family and foundation-owned businesses

Frankfurt am Main. Würth Group handed in the best annual report 2008 out of a group of the 240 biggest, non-listedfamily and foundation-owned businesses in Germany.In the competition for the first private publ!c Award ever offered, the company from Künzelsau achieved 80 % of the maximum number of points. Runner-up is the report issued by CLAAS, a manufacturer of agricultural machines whereas Giesecke & Devrient came in third. Apart from this, prizes were awarded for bestlanguage (Voith), best design (Marquard & Bahls) as well as bestcorporate governance communication (Delton).

Behind the private publ!c Award is the owner-managedcommunication consulting ergo together with the auditing companyPKF Fasselt Schlage Lang und Stolz. They are supported by highly renowned partners such as Morgan Stanley Bank and Roland Berger Strategy Consultants that are also represented in the jury. The decision was based on a catalog of more than 70 quality criteriaconcerning content, structure, language as well as design and user-friendliness of the annual reports. This isthe first system for the tailor-made evaluation of annual reports focused on non-listed family and foundation-owned businesses. The results of the analysis of the annual reports and the accompanying survey are edited in the large-scale study titled "Aus guter Familie".

The annual reports analyzed range from publications as thick as catalogs to thin booklets, from austere financial reports toa trade show stand in print format. The trend to value-orientedreporting – long since the standard for listed companies – has by far not yetbecome widely accepted. What’s also interesting: By far not all family and foundation-owned businesses are already making use of all the advantages offered by a stable owner structure particularly in the crisis of the financial market. On the other hand, forecasts often do not beat around the bush since they do not need to consider stock prices.

“The time had come to finally appreciate the in part excellentreports appropriately“, said Andreas Martin, member of the management of ergo Kommunikation during the award ceremony in Frankfurt am Main on October 26, 2009. The annual report of Adolf Würth not only convinced the jury owing to the transparent design of the development of business and the operating result. The values of a modern family-owned business are also communicated discreetly and brilliantly concerning the language used.

Another objective was to give businesses a standard of comparison andrecommend convincing solutions to be copied by other companies.“It is our intention to increase the prestige of the annual report withinthe businesses on the whole", said Martin. “In view of the widespread intereston the part of the family and foundation-owned businesses we will also offer the award next year.”
