Knowledge of the Business World: Practical Business Program Introduces Teachers to the Würth Company

Künzelsau. The practical business program “WIPP-L“ for teachers initiated by the Competence Center Economic Education in cooperation with the Ministry of Education Baden-Württemberg offered the twenty participating teachers of the administrative district Stuttgart the opportunity to sample business atmosphere: In the trading company Würth the teachers were given an overview of the processes and functions of the business within a one-week training period from July 13 - 17, 2009.

Among others, they worked in the following departments: Finance/Controlling, Customer Management, Marketing/Advertising, Product and Sales Organization. On top of this, all participants accompanied a Würth sales representative in order to visit craft customers and learn more about the tasks and projects of a sales representative.

With the practical business program organized for the first time, the Competence Center Economic Education intends to convey knowledge to the participants about business management and applied economics. The starting pistol was fired in Stuttgart in April. During a self-learn phase the teachers went through an e-learning program first that also included a management business game. The excursion to Würth helped the participants to consolidate their knowledge and get a first-hand impression of practical business.

“The program covers an immense range of knowledge and offers an overview of the structure and the mode of operation of a business”, says Thomas Bauer, teacher at Realschule Pfedelbach. “Now we need to deal with transferring this knowledge to our schools in practical terms.”

The knowledge conveyed is supposed to be used in putting academic projects into practice such as building up a student-run business. The program also helps teachers to establish contact with people inside the company. “The program clearly showed me that it is important to share economic knowledge with the students as a team of teachers and in an interdisciplinary fashion, building up a network with neighboring schools and educational partners in the region", remarks Ingrid Modi, teacher at Theodor-Heuglin-School in Ditzingen-Hirschlanden.

Following the program another meeting is scheduled for the spring of 2010 where participants are supposed to present how they integrated the knowledge gathered into their everyday life at school. Thanks to the very good response it is planned to continue the practical business program for other administrative districts in Baden-Württemberg in the future.
