Künzelsau/Tübingen. Within the framework of the ceremony on the occasion of the annual Dies Universitatis, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen honored the Künzelsau entrepreneur Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth with the University Award on Wednesday, 21 October 2009. The award was handed over by Mr. Bernd Egler, University Rector. In his speech of thanks, Prof. Würth pointed out that although conveying knowledge and technique is important, it is management culture and humanity that are of the utmost significance.

With the Tübingen University Award initiated last year, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen honors outstanding friends and sponsors who have made key contributions to promote the development of the university and foster research and teaching. Reinhold Würth was honored this year as a longstanding and significant sponsor of the University. Rector Engler praised him as an “outstanding supporter, a patron of fine arts and literature” who had made a decisive contribution also to safeguarding the cultural heritage, e.g. when acquiring the Fürstenberg collection of medieval art or when restoring "Cappella Palatina" in Palermo, which had been left severely damaged by an earthquake. He added that Reinhold Würth had been a loyal and generous supporter to the University of Tübingen for years, without whose support many things could not have been put into practice. Engler pointed out especially the Tübingen Poetry Professorship, which has been sponsored by the Würth company for many years and has become a hallmark for which the University is renowned even internationally.

Not least, Reinhold Würth was an external member of the University Council, which was newly founded in 2000, for six years. As Rector Engler pointed out, he had proved himself to be “a personality in public life who gladly fulfills his obligation to the public good, both in answer to requests and his own sense of duty, voluntarily assuming responsibilities beyond all business interests.”

Up until 1994, Reinhold Würth managed the Würth Group, thereafter chairing the Würth Group’s Advisory Board. From 1999 to 2003 he was in charge of building up the Interdisciplinary Institute of Entrepreneurship at the University of Karlsruhe (technical university). Since 2006, Reinhold Würth has been the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Würth Group’s Family Trusts. As early as 1991, Eberhard Karls University made him Honorary Senator. In 1999, the Faculty of Economics gave him an Honorary Doctorate. In his address, Reinhold Würth not only expressed his gratitude for the award received, but especially to all his employees who had only made possible the Würth Group's growth. He asked the University not to neglect management culture, citing it as a key factor of success. Reinhold Würth: “Although conveying knowledge and technique is important, it is management culture and humanity that are of the utmost significance.”
